Stage 4 Archaeological Mitigation

Stage 4 Archaeological Mitigation is recommended for site of significant value. New Era Archaeology’s preferred Stage 4 method is through avoidance and protection. This can be achieved through redesigning or through the zoning of park land or green/open space. In some case avoidance and protection is not feasible, in which case Stage 4 excavations are recommended. The purpose of the excavation method is to fully document the site and recover all archaeological material. During this stage all features and middens are excavated and fully documented. It is very important to fully document the entire process enabling future research.

New Era Archaeology engages all interested parties including the proponent, governing authorities and all related Indigenous communities when determining the Stage 4 strategy.

Stage 4 Archaeological Mitigation is completed in accordance to the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries (MHSTCI) Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists. A report detailing the Stage 4 is completed and submitted to the (MHSTCI) for review and concurrence.
